Trauma-Informed Care for Children and Adolescents: Diagnosis, Impact, &  Treatment Across Cultures

Abstract

This 7 hour continuing educational program provides a thorough exploration of the multifaceted impact of traumatic stress on children and adolescents.  The mental health professional will leave with increased knowledge and skills to support youth effectively. Drawing on contemporary research and clinical practice, the program is designed to achieve several key learning objectives. Participants will first gain foundational insights into how trauma manifests in the physiological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral realms of young individuals. This foundational knowledge will be followed by a detailed examination of complex trauma's unique developmental effects, distinguishing it from other traumatic experiences. Further, the program will guide attendees through the application of DSM-5 criteria, improving their ability to recognize and diagnose post-traumatic stress in youth accurately. In analyzing the behavioral impacts of child abuse and neglect, participants will understand the interconnectedness of maltreatment, peer victimization, and mental health, recognizing the roles of aggression, self-control, and depression. The program will also introduce trauma-informed care models tailored for diverse populations, incorporating cultural humility and responsiveness to foster effective and inclusive treatment approaches. We will examine trauma's specific impact on Latinx youth and other vulnerable groups, with a focus on trauma-informed interventions in youth justice. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and evidence-based guidelines, this program offers a comprehensive framework for understanding, assessing, and addressing trauma in youth, with a commitment to diversity and inclusion in trauma care.
