WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This intermediate to advanced-level EMDR continuing education training is designed for licensed mental health professionals who have completed EMDR Basic Training and want to strengthen their clinical work with updating their understanding of dissociation through a somatic lens.

It is especially relevant for therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists working in trauma-focused settings.

Please note: The morning session is open to all licensed clinicians. The afternoon session assumes completion of EMDR Basic Training and is not designed for clinicians without that foundation.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Learn to understand and treat dissociation through a somatic, trauma-informed lens that emphasizes safety, embodied awareness, and the integration of overwhelming experiences.

Updating Your Understanding of Dissociation through a Somatic Lens provides clinicians with an integrative, trauma-informed framework for understanding and treating dissociation across the lifespan. Moving beyond traditional pathology-based perspectives, this course explores dissociation as a normal, adaptive neurobiological response to overwhelming experiences that affects the flow of information processing, perception, sensation, and awareness.

  • Understanding dissociation through a somatic and trauma-informed lens

  • Recognizing dissociation across the clinical spectrum

  • Identifying signs, symptoms, and embodied experiences of dissociation

  • Applying safety-focused and body-based treatment strategies

  • Integrating memory, sensory, and ego state interventions in therapy

  • Enhancing therapeutic attunement when working with dissociative clients

The training combines lecture, clinical case examples, experiential exercises, and guided discussion to move from conceptual understanding to applied clinical strategy.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

After this training, clinicians will be better prepared to:

  • Define dissociation as a normative, adaptive neurobiological process that alters the flow of information processing in response to perceived overwhelm.

  • Differentiate dissociative experiences across the clinical spectrum, from common

  • everyday phenomena to complex presentations such as dissociative identity disorder.

  • Describe the phenomenological and neurobiological mechanisms underlying dissociation, including changes in perception, sensation, and awareness.

  • Evaluate the limitations and appropriate use of DSM-based diagnostic categories when conceptualizing dissociation in clinical practice.

  • Identify common subjective and observable indicators of dissociation, including distortions in time, space, perception, memory, and embodiment.

  • Apply core treatment principles for working with dissociation, including increasing safety, enhancing embodied awareness, and expanding tolerance for dissociated material.

  • Compare and integrate memory-focused, body/sensory-focused, and ego state–focused interventions in the treatment of dissociation within an attuned therapeutic relationship.

  • Apply the above objectives through live consultation and discussion.

TAKE THIS INTO YOUR NEXT SESSION

The strategies in this training — from assessment and inclusive documentation to AIP-informed case conceptualization — are designed to be applied in clinical work right away, starting with your next client session.

HOW THIS CHANGES YOUR CLINICAL WORK

This training helps clinicians recognize and respond to dissociation with greater accuracy, confidence, and compassion by understanding it as an adaptive response to overwhelm rather than simply a symptom or disorder. Participants will gain practical, somatic, and trauma-informed tools to enhance safety, attunement, and integration in their clinical work with dissociative clients.

This is not an add-on technique — Understanding Dissociates becomes part of how clinicians understand memory networks, client experiences, and therapeutic attunement.

  • COMMON QUESTIONS

    Who is this training for?

This course is designed for licensed mental health professionals who have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training and want to strengthen their understanding of dissociation through a somatic, neurobiological approach.

Do I need prior EMDR training?

Yes. Participants should have completed an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training, as this course builds on foundational EMDR knowledge and skills.

    What will I learn?

You'll gain practical strategies to recognize and respond to dissociation, integrate somatic-informed interventions into EMDR therapy, and improve clinical confidence when working with complex trauma.

Is this training practical or mostly theoretical?

Both. The course combines current research, clinical theory, case examples, and practical interventions you can begin using in your practice right away.

What makes this training different from other dissociation courses?

Rather than viewing dissociation solely through diagnostic categories, this course explores dissociation as an adaptive neurobiological process. You'll learn practical, somatic-informed strategies for recognizing and responding to dissociation during EMDR therapy.

Will this help me work with clients who become dissociated during EMDR?

Absolutely. A primary focus of the training is recognizing dissociation in real time and learning somatic-informed approaches that support safety, regulation, and continued therapeutic progress.

    Will a recording be available?

Yes. Registrants receive 90-day access to the event recording after the live training. To receive EMDRIA or CE credits, participants must attend the live virtual training in full and meet completion requirements. An on-demand version is typically released separately 20–30 days after the live event.

Do I receive EMDRIA-approved CE credits?

EMDR & Beyond is an EMDRIA-approved provider of continuing education. This course has been submitted for 8 EMDRIA credits, currently under review. Licensed mental health professionals who attend the full live training and meet completion requirements will receive continuing education credits consistent with EMDRIA standards once approved. CE credit count will be confirmed prior to the training date.

    Is this training APA-approved?

EMDR & Beyond is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. This course has been submitted for 8 APA credits, currently under review. Credit count will be confirmed prior to the training date.
